After 15 years working in the construction industry, from offshore oil and gas to land-based projects, I developed a deep appreciation for the importance of protecting steel structures. While studying non-destructive testing, I became particularly interested in the role that surface preparation and coatings play in long-term structural integrity. That interest led me to dive deep into blasting media, and specifically, garnet sand.
That’s when Iron Horse Industries was born, a 100% New Zealand-owned and operated business where I, as Managing Director, work directly with our clients to ensure quality and service are never compromised.
Our garnet is mined from natural garnet rock over 200 metres underground. It’s then crushed and processed through magnetic separation, washing, drying, and precision screening. The result? A high-performance garnet with sharp edges, superior hardness, and a uniform particle distribution ideal for blasting applications.
Because our garnet undergoes multiple magnetic and washing stages, we eliminate impurities and dust — meaning you get more usable product per bag, a cleaner blast, and less mess on site.
